6.1.1: Macrocycle: The Year‑Long Runway
The macrocycle is your training year. For a hypertrophy‑focused lifter, it is a string of mesocycles, each with a clear purpose, chained together by the principle of progressive overload. The macrocycle asks only one question: Is my physique improving, and are my key lifts getting stronger year over year?
Within the macrocycle, you make deliberate decisions about what you want to improve. You might spend 12 weeks emphasising glutes and side delts, then 8 weeks on back thickness, then a maintenance phase during a busy period. There is no fixed timetable; you move on when you are satisfied with the adaptation.
