5.2 Volume: The Modulator of the Intensity Signal

Once intensity (proximity to failure) is sufficient to recruit high‑threshold motor units and generate high fiber‑level mechanical tension, volume—the number of hard sets per muscle per week—determines the total dose of that growth signal. More hard sets mean more total time that mechanotransduction pathways are active, up to the point where recovery limits further benefit.

But volume is a modulator, not a replacement for intensity. Ten sets at RIR 4 provide negligible stimulus; four sets at RIR 1 provide a robust one. This is why “hard sets” (0–3 RIR) are the only unit of volume that matters for hypertrophy.
